Covered California

Covered CA is a network where consumers are able to obtain brand name health insurance coverage at a cost effective rate. Consumers are granted a discount through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which determines whether the individual or the household qualifies for a health plan through the exchange or for the Medi-Cal program through the state. Eligibility is based on the household income, number of members in a household, the residence of the applicants, and the ages of all household members. The tax household income is compared with the federal poverty level guidelines for the household size to determine how much Applied Premium Tax Credit that household qualifies for.

Those who intend to apply for Covered CA must possess the following qualification.

·         Be a California Resident

·         Have legal status. (A U.S. Citizen, US National, or Lawfully present in the US)

·         And not be incarcerated at the time of application

All US Citizens, US Nationals, and lawfully present individuals are required to enroll in a health plan by the end of the open enrollment period for that current year. Consequently, if a member is a legal resident and does not have an exemption from purchasing health insurance, then the member would be liable to pay a tax penalty when filing taxes for that year.
